In case you're wondering where I've been:
1. My mom had shoulder surgery and I was helping her out (terrible excuse)
2. Rosh Hashanah
3. Yom Kippur
4. Sukkot - well...school was closed so there goes another day!
5. Traveling...so on with the post!

The first weekend of October brought us to New York for a long anticipated wedding. My college roommate, sorority big sister and fabulous friend Lisa finally married her long-time love Cem. Poor Cem has been across the US at all of our weddings (he's been to Omaha, Cleveland, Baltimore, and San Francisco) over the past 10 years and it was a joy to finally be able to celebrate their big day. The wedding was excellent! Lisa was a beautiful bride. Of course, since we traveled all they way to New York, we were able to visit with best college friend Chris, cousin Mikey, old friends Jon and Maureen and their new baby, Lucy, and Amanda, Park and the girls. It was so much fun seeing everyone. I am only sorry we didn't get to spend more time!

We spent the bulk of our time in New York sight-seeing and walking. Really - we walked everywhere and it was great. I was amazed at how the West Village has changed. Perry Street is absolutely fabulous! The meatpacking district is really cool as well.

So, I know you're all wondering what trends I observed in the Big Apple. My favorite - jeans tucked into tall boots. I have long resisted this trend. However, it really does look nice (when worn with the right jeans and boots). The key to this look is an equestrian-style boot and a tailored top such as a classic black cashmere turtleneck. I found a great pair of Born tall boots that are both comfy and cute! Of course, everyone is wearing statement necklaces, chunky sweaters and in New York...lots of black!

The Dana Kaufman Project

So, I've been watching the Rachel Zoe Project on Bravo these days. And, I have to say, while she is quite entertaining, and she has built a rather impressive empire by dressing celebs, I would be much better suited for the position. First, I've never insulted Anna Wintour. Second, I live in the real world, not on planet Rachel. That chick is wiggedy wack! So, if anyone out there wants to give me their AMEX platinum and send me shopping - just point me to the nearest Neimans, Sak's, Barneys, or Bendel's and I promise, I will not dissapoint! I have impeccible taste (most of the time!).

If you are against anything (aside from the issue I pointed out in my earlier post, Where've I Been?) I hope you will join my campaign against men and jean shorts. Whoever is out there, and has ever seen a man look good in a pair of denim shorts is plain lying! If your husband, fiance, boyfriend, friend with benefits, best guy friend, brother, son, cousin, neighbor - you get the picture - if anyone you know and respect has a pair, please instruct them to get rid of them immediately!!! Men in demin shorts is a definite no no. Totally unflattering, you look like you're trapped in 1989 and it's just not a good idea. So. Get rid of them. With so many things to complain about, you would think I'd be blogging non-stop. I can't really explain where I've been. First I was wrapped up with Marti's wedding, which really deserves its own air time because it was truly fabulous. Then I was consumed by the political conventions. Now I am just plain obsessed with how much Sarah Palin scares the ever living crap out of me. I don't like to talk politics on my blog, but are people really considering electing that sack of shit?! Really? You want someone who just got her first passport an hour ago to be one heartbeat away from leading the free world? This is a woman who went to seven undergrad programs before she finally graduated from college and who has absolutely nothing on her resume for like 7 years and then suddenly becomes mayor of her small town. And boom. She thinks she can help solve the largest financial crisis our country has seen since the great depression?! GET REAL PEOPLE. WAKE THE EFF UP!!!

OK, that's enough. I feel much better now. Except that I have to start a fresh post now that I tainted this one with political talk. How do you lose an entire month?! I just realized I haven't posted anything in a month. Terrible. Terrible! So, here's what I've been up to.
1. I've been settling into my regular works schedule which takes me to the office from 8-5 two days a week and keeps me working from home the rest of the time. It's been great!
2. We've been enjoying the pool. Sadly, the pool days might be winding down. But we've had a great time and while it took about 6 weeks my Benjamin did finally learn to love the pool!
3. We spent a week on Cape Cod. Not nearly enough time, but we did have a great trip! Next year we're hoping to go for longer, but we'll see....
4. I've been to many bridal showers for one of my oldest and dearest friends who is getting married at the end of the month. We've only been waiting for this one for 12 years!! I've been helping Marti with some minor wedding prep and it's been a blast, so Marti if you read this thanks for letting me participate in the big day (I mean other than being a bridesmaid).
5. This weekend we are visiting another very old and very dear friend (and the mother of my G-d Children) and her equally as fabulous husband in Kansas City. We try to get together regularly and enjoy a nice night out. KC is just a few hours away and we love to get away every once in a while. This trip will be especially fun because we are visiting the Truman Library. My husband is a HUGE history person, and we are both fascinated by Harry Truman. This is one place we will both enjoy!
6. School starts a week from Monday. Abby is in her last year of pre-school and Benjamin is just beginning his adventure in education.
As you can see, I've been a little busy. I guess that answers the question, "how does one lose an entire month...."

Did You Look in the Mirror?!

First - happy 4th of July to all of my loyal readers (all three of you). The fourth is my second favorite holiday, just after Thanksgiving. I love that it's a day to spend with family and friends and I love the traditions my family has for that day. I have been celebrating the 4th the same way since I was a baby and I wouldn't change it! We spent the day at Lake Manawa (thanks Marti and George for carrying out the tradition I love so much) and then went to the annual 4th of July BBQ and Jewish food fest complements of the Gilinsky family. It was a great day for all of us!

So, on my way to work on July 3 I stopped at me neighborhood Starbucks for my daily dose of chai and noticed a woman who was taking the red, white and blue seriously. But, my friends, if you are over the age of, say, 8, it is really inappropriate to dress up for the holiday. There really is no way that this woman looked in the mirror and said to herself, "damn, I look good," or "this is appropriate to wear to work." Just no way! I know you're dying to know what she was wearing: A softball shirt (no joke - white shirt with red sleeves and red piping around the v-neck), a too-tight navy blue skirt that hit her below the knee, nude nylons (I didn't even know they still sold nylons!), and open toe sandals in brown cheap leather. There's someone who woke up in the morning and pulled out their "4th of July outfit." I bet she has a hideous christmas sweater, too.

Ladies, I urge you.....if you own special holiday gear, put it in the garbage. Tonight. Please. Get rid of it!

Vegas and Shopping!

It's been a while since my last post. For whatever reason, we are completely busy. Our schedule is packed from sun up to sun down. Oh, the joys of summer!

A few weeks ago I went to Vegas for a weekend of shopping, sunning and eating with two girlfriends. We were celebrating Marti's upcoming wedding and it was the perfect girl's getaway. We stayed at the Bellagio and spent lots of quality time at the pool. When we had taken in all the sun we could manage we were off to Fashion Show Mall, the shops at the new Palazzo, or The Forum Shops. We also did our fair share of eating and drinking. As usual, our dinner at Tao did not disappoint!

Because we visited so many shops I made a huge mental list of what I need for my summer wardrobe. Now, you would think that since it's already almost the end of June I would have my summer wardrobe, but since we didn't have a day over 60 degrees until 2 weeks ago, I am a little behind in my shopping. That, combined with the fact that I barely have a free second to spare would be yet another reason I am still missing some summer "must haves." A few items I decided simply cannot wait:

A strapless swim suit so that I can avoid having weird tan lines at Marti's wedding (hwich should be arriving from Nordstrom any day)

A new pair of seven "Ginger" jeans (again, on their way from Nordstrom). I wear my Gingers quite often and I think I need at least two pairs in my wardrobe. I love the dark, wide leg and have yet to find another pair I like as much.

A black cotton maxi dress

A summer-weight gauze-y scarf

A black tube top for girls nights out (thank you forever 21)

A black tank with sequins (complements of Old Navy)

A gray cardigan (cute, with a bow enclosure, because my office is FREEZING - from Gap)

I know it's not a very exciting list, but when your office has no dress code (I wear jeans and flip flops!) and you have small children, a tank top with sequins is considered black-tie.

Oh, and I am thrilled to report that Forever 21 and Sephora have finally opened! I haven't visited either store yet. The reports from my girlfriends are that both stores are very crowded so I am giving them a few weeks. I need the amateur shoppers some time before an expert such as myself goes in! I like to shop early in the day, on a week day, when the crowds are smaller so I have room to browse.

What NOT To Wear

I tend to have the moments quite often: I am out somewhere in public and see someone wearing something that is so horrible that there is NO WAY that person looked in the mirror before they left the house and said "damn, I look good!" I mean, did you even look in the flipping mirror?! Then, there are the women I see wearing clothes that clearly came from a juniors section. Not that I don't sometimes wear stuff from the juniors section, because sometimes I do. But I mean wearing stuff that is nine sizes too small, or that looks too immature for a woman's figure, is made of cheap material, you get the idea. Ladies, take note. Can't we all look as though we have some pride?
Some things just are NOT appropriate!
1. If you're at work, wearing anything with lettering across the ass is a definite DON'T. Seriously, I don't ever want to see rhinestone words across anyone ass again in my place or work, or elsewhere. Frankly, no one over the age of 21 should be wearing letters across their ass.
2. Really, there is no need to fit every single trend into one outfit. Pick one trend and go with it. I don't need to see animal prints, sparkles and vibrant colors all in the same outfit. It makes me dizzy.
3. If you think your jeans are too tight, you probably should not wear them to the office. No one wants to see every dimple - especially not me!
4. Please, when you are in a public place, let's keep our shoes on our feet! I really do not want to sit next to another woman at the movies who decides it's OK to take off her shoes and then put her feet up on the chair in front of her for the entire duration of the film. Yes, you heard that right people. SHE TOOK OFF HER SHOES IN A THEATER AND PUT HER FEET UP ON THE CHAIR. How gross is that?! Keep your flipping shoes on people!

I don't think these are difficult rules to follow. A monkey could make this work. So, women everywhere, pay attention to what you look like and please act like you care!

Family Photos

We had family photos taken last weekend. I was completely stressed out before the photos because, up until about 3 hours prior, I didn't know what I was going to wear! I had the kids clothes straightened out well in advance. Abby wore white jeans and an adorable blue trapeze tank from The Gap. Benjamin wore khakis and a blue polo (I know - too easy). The afternoon of the "shoot" I found a really cute top at a local boutique. It's gray with some white sequins on it. I paired that with white pants.

The pictures turned out great, and I invite everyone to check them out at www.paigebphotography.com. Click on the blog and you can see some of our photos. If you are looking to have photos taken of your family, I highly recommend Paige!

Wedding Prep!

No silly, not my wedding!! But, I am going to be in a wedding at the end of the summer. I think it's the first time since my own wedding that I am really excited to be in a wedding! Not that I haven't enjoyed being a part of the zillion weddings I have been in, but the last time I was in a wedding was just a few weeks after Benjamin was born. I looked like a whale in my dress, I was exhausted, we had to leave early...the list goes on. The bride in this upcoming wedding is one of my oldest friends and she is letting all of the bridesmaids choose our own chocolate brown dress for the wedding! I am particularly excited about the dress because I love chocolate brown and it's a great color for me. I've settled on this dress by Nicole Miller. I still need to track down shoes for this puppy, but I am confidant I can find something I like. It's an outdoor wedding, so this dress is just the right length.

For the rehearsal dinner I found the most adorable navy and cream silk blouse super wide leg pants, complements of my friend Jenny Schulte and her Bill Blass New York trunk show. I cannot wait to wear this outfit!

We are headed off to Vegas in a few weeks for the bachelorette party and I cannot wait! I am sooo looking forward to laying out by the pool without having to keep my eye on the toddler set!

Spring is Here

Spring is finally here (I think). We had a few really nice days last week and yesterday was a very nice day. I even got a tan line from sitting out at the park! Even my kids have gotten into the spring spirit! We spent some much needed time outside. Benjamin has mastered the Crazy Coupe and then took some time to admire Abby's sidewalk art. She has completely embraced sidewalk paint and stencils. Hours of entertainment (and mess) for all....

On another note, if you're looking for cute play clothes for boys, Old Navy has some really cute stuff these days. Benjamin seems to have gone through a growth spurt, so we spent a few minutes at Old Navy this morning, stocking up on size 2T. I can't believe my baby is in toddler sizes!!!!

Hot Lips!

The last few weeks have been very busy at our house. For the cost of my insurance co-pay I spent 20 minutes with a dermatologist who checked my skin from the top of my scalp to the bottom of my feet (and even between my toes!) to make sure that my skin is free and clear from any suspicious looking moles or melanoma. With the doctor's seal of approval, I am ready for another summer full of fun at the pool (with suncsreen of course!). Now, if the sun would just come out, and if it would just warm up about 40 degrees it would certainly help. I highly recommend that all of my readers (yes, all 3 of you!) get yourselves checked every other year. Since I returned from my trip to Chicago both of my children and myself have been sick. After several days of on and off fever and a terrible cough, the doctor finally put Abby on an antibiotic this morning. Hopefully, she is on the mend! I don't know how much more I can take of being forced to stay home. The good news is that I think I am on the "backside" of my cold and hopefully it will be gone by the end of the week.

On to more exciting things....I don't typically shop at Ann Taylor Loft, but I like to look every so often to see what they're showing. I find that Ann Taylor and Loft tend to be a bit more conservative than I usually dress. Ann Taylor is great for suits and work wear, and when I worked in Boston and had to be dressed up every day I shopped there a ton. A disclaimer is that I also worked at Ann Taylor on Newbury Street in Boston, and I loved it. In my new job, we are very casual and I can wear jeans to work so I try to pair them with a funky top. I don't wear many suits or dresses. However, I saw this dress at Loft, and it's so cute and chic! I love the lantern sleeve, and I think this can be worn many ways. In spring/summer with flats or flip flops for casual day or with a funky heel and a big necklace for evening. For fall/winter with tights and boots or even a turtleneck underneath. I can see this dress getting a ton of wear, and the people in my office wondering why I am wearing a dress!!!!

My Weekend of Shopping and Learning

Last Weekend I was invited to attend a womens leadership conference in Chicago. I was fortunate enough to arrive in the windy city a day early to enjoy some shopping before the learning began. I did a nice survey of the large department stores (Macys, Nordstrom, Saks and Neimans) as well as some fun spots like French Connection, Lucy, Sephora (of course) and some basics like Banana Republic. My shopping was cut a little short by the nasty weather (blustery snow) and the fact that I was under the weather. And, my trip was cut short thanks to my sick children. But, I still managed to find some cute spring items. Here are a few of my faves....

I just love this little jacket by twilltwentytwo. It's cozy fleece, but with a flair. It has fun bell sleeves and w portrait collar, which I find to be quite flattering. I think it's the perfect addition to my wardrobe - especially since I am always looking for ways to dress up my jeans for work.

Another item I am eye-ing for spring is this little Marc Jacobs nylon hobo bag. He has the nylon in several styles, but I am partial to the hobo-style. It also comes in a pea-green and a cream color, but I think I will have to stick with basic black. Black is timeless, it goes with everything, and if it gets a spilled on, no one will know but me!

In other exciting news, I recently had a communication breakthrough with my son. He is finally using words to communicate and it's great. Yesterday we had our first real conversation. It went like this:

Benjamin: froo
mom: would you like some fruit
Benjamin: uh-huh
mom: Do you want organes
Benjamin: no
mom: Do you want an apple
Benjamin: no
mom: do you want a banana
Benjamin: uh-huh

I know it probably doesn't sound that exciting, but for someone who listens to a lot of whining, this is HUGE news!

It's Coming!

We're finally getting a real live actual full-sized Sephora here in the big "O!" I cannot wait! Our brand new Sephora store will open in May at Village Pointe (for my local readers). I am actually saving up for my first visit. I think I might have to get a sitter so that I can peruse the aisles on a quiet weekday morning without bringing Benjamin along in his stroller. He is a pretty patient shopper, but I think an hour in Sephora would make him crazy. In other exciting retail news, Forever 21 will be opening at the Westroads Mall later this spring. And, for those of you who like modern linens, Dwell Studios has introduced a line of bedding and accent pillows for Target. I can't wait to check it out in the stores!

On another note, I am headed to Chicago next weekend for a conference. Before I had kids, I LOVED to watch the pre-show shows and gaggle at the clothes. I could watch about eight hours of pre-show fluff and then the real extravaganza would begin. When I lived on my own I ordered in a special dinner and took my phone off the hook. When I lived with roommates we had a no talking during speeches rule and would rate the clothes.

I didn't think the actual Oscar show was that great (blame the writer's strike) but the red carpet did no disappoint. Renee Zellweger looked beautiful in Carolina Herrerra and Cameron Diaz wore a stunning Dior. Heidi Klum wore a very chic Galliano. One of my favorites was Jennifer Garner in Oscar de la Renta. There were a few red carpet "misses" as well. I didn't think Nicole Kidman looked all that, and her necklace was ridiculous. Tilda Swinton - oy vey what was she thinking?!

You can catch all of the red carpet happenings at www.usmagazine.com!

This is Getting Old...

OK - Here we are in mid-February and school for tomorrow has been canceled due to the sub-zero temperatures. It's been cold and snowy here since November. I am so over it. I need spring!!!! Especially since the new spring clothes I've seen look super cute! I am crushing on this very cute, inexpensive jacket from The Gap. It's just so cheerful and swingy. How can you not smile when you see that coming down the street. On the other hand, since I primarily wear black, or shades of black, I might not be able to break out of my shell and wear this wonderful bright yellow without giving up some slice of my identity. Don't despair, this cute jacket also comes in a lovely navy blue.

I found some very cute tops by French Connection, which I think will make fine additions to my spring wardrobe. I am looking for cute tops that work well with my wide-leg jeans and black pants, and the tops I found accomplish that goal. Plus, they can be layered which is extra nice since it might be June before we can wear short sleeves here in the tundra of Omaha! I am desperate to go shopping for something other than toddler birthday gifts and diapers.

Oops! How does one miss an entire month?!

How does someone miss an entire month on her blog?! Apparently I've been very busy!!!

In all fairness, I spent 10 days traveling. After leaving my offspring with their grandparents for a week of spoilage, my husband and I embarked on a cruise in the southern Caribbean for a week of some serious R&R with my parents, brother and his girlfriend. The trip was in honor of my mom's 60th birthday, but the trip was scheduled over my birthday so it was a win-win. Of course, after the trip it took us a whole week to get re-acquainted with home and cold weather, and then another week to catch up at work and poof! As loyal Von Maur customers, Benjamin and I went to the store to participate in the opening morning. I was happy to see the store jam-packed with customers. People were shopping, and they were happy. There were some bitter-sweet moments - store associates hugging customers - but I think everyone here is happy that we can all move on. Benjamin brought a bouquet of flowers tied with a snowflake, which he gave to the associates in children's shoes.

Of course, no trip to Von Maur is complete unless you make a purchase. This is my fun place. But sometimes I just can't help myself, and it really doesn't seem appropriate to write about anything else in this space, which is usually reserved for thoughts on shopping and style.

Here in Omaha, we've got some pretty decent shopping. We have the usual big chain stores and some very nice boutiques. For the most part our department stores are lacking, with one exception: Von Maur. Von Maur is one of my favorite places to shop. Their shoe department is fabulous, I love the contemporary fashion section (where I got my petite Joe's Jeans) and the handbag section and cosmetic sections are also noteworthy. The Von Maur employees are top notch - always courteous, knowledgeable and smiling.

For those of you who live under a rock, a massive shooting took place at our Von Maur store yesterday. At the end of six horrific minutes, nine people were dead, including the gunman. If you want to read more about this tragedy you can log on to www.omaha.com and read full details. I wish I could eloquently write about my feelings on this topic. Unfortunately, there aren't words in the English language that would allow me to appropriately say what I think.

I hope that we can all find our way back to Von Maur. I know it will take time before I am ready to go there, and while the first trip will be scary, I think it is very important to support the store and show people everywhere that we will not let one troubled person ruin one of our great retail destinations. We can't let this guy with his gun win. We just can't. And, we won't.

Wicked Cute

Has anyone seen the new Erin Featherston collection at Target? Come to mama!

A few weeks ago I got my hair colored. She recommended that I purchase this round, boar-bristle brush from Sally Beauty Supply and showed me a few tricks for blowing my hair out straight. Viola! I've been getting compliments on it ever since! Thank you, Christi, for the suggestion! Here's the brush that has changed my hair-life - called the Comare Flare Round Rosewood Brush.

And finally, today I had a quick coffee date with some girlfriends. We had a lovely conversation and of course I had to ask about the facial cleanser issue I am currently facing (no pun intended). One of my friends is an even bigger product junky than me, and she has worked in the beauty industry so I was very interested to hear what she had to say. In this group, I was kind of expecting that everyone would be using department store brand cosmetics. I was pleasantly surprised that they all use drug store brand, dermatologist recommended products! On their recommendations, I think I am going to go with either Purpose or Cetaphil for my cleanser and Neutrogena for my moisturizer and eye cream. My friend who worked in the industry had some interesting things to say about toner (we don't really need it) and serums (probably more than we really need if we take care of our skin). I am going to trust my friends' advice!

Oh Beautiful, For Platform Suede

Ladies - there's a new shoe on the block! It's the Yves Saint Laurent Tribute Pump and it's beautiful! It comes in black patent leather, violet suede (shown here) and red suede. I am actually lusting after the red suede, though since I already have a pair of red suede pumps, maybe the violet would be a better purchase? They are in a 4" heel for those not afraid to step out. For people like me, they also come in a 3" heel. OK, What are your favorite things that cost under $10? Last week I found out! I had a fabulous little get together with some great girlfriends - a "My Favorite Things" party. I invited eight girlfriends to come, and to bring their favorite thing that costs under $10 to share with the other attendees. For the weeks leading up to the party everyone was very secretive about their items and the anticipation was killing us all!

So what were the favorite items among my very chic, cool and cutting-edge friends? My fave was super cozy Karen Numeier (or however you spell it) socks and CE Bigelow lip gloss. Other faves included:
-delicious tea and a sample of la mer facial cream
- boots products, a tide stain stick and salad dressing
- pedicure socks
- old navy fleece gloves
- lulu lemon head band
- Burts Bees and CE Bigelow lip gloss
- Sees Candy

Getting the goodies was lots of fun. But truthfully, just being able to spend an evening drinking wine and pomegranate martinis and eating yummy treats with my girlfriends was the best!

Snow White and the Lion

Last week was Halloween. The past three weeks in my house have been very busy. First, we visited Simsbury, CT for the wedding our our friends Ken and Karen (who my husband and I introduced!). While there, we visited the West Farms Mall which is fabulous, and of course has a Sephora. We had only a few minutes, so our visit was just a tease.

The following weekend, however, was spent in Las Vegas with awesome friends. Of course, in between hanging at the pool, eating delicious food, hanging out at exclusive nightclubs and gambling, I was able to sneak away for some quality Sephora time. Yippee!! My favorite purchase was the Benefit "10" bronzer/blush combo. I LOVE this product. One sweep of this both bronzes and highlights and looks amazing on any complexion! I highly recommend this product.

About that trip to Vegas - it was the bomb. Of course, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but I can't think of a better group of people to spend a weekend with and I can't wait to do it again!

I just wanted to take this opportunity thank my travel partners!

Product Junkie!

I looooooooooooooooooooove products! I will try just about anything! I say just about because with my sensitive skin I am pretty careful with facial cleansers and lotions. But I do love to play at the cosmetics counter at a good department store.

I have been working on a product comparison between two mineral makeup products. I have purchased Bare Escentuals i.d. bare minerals and sheer coverage. Both products work well and offer that airbrushed look. I really want to do a side-by-side comparison but I don't want to look like a freakazoid! What I have been able to determine is that the sheer coverage product is "flat" and the i.d. bare minerals has more shimmer to it.

There are a few products I am itching to try. The first is Benefit's creaseless cream shadow/liner in "skinny jeans." This gunmetal silver color looks just perfect with a black liner to create a more modern smoky eye. I am also very anxious to get my hands on "10" also by Benefit. "10" is a bronzer and blush together in one compact so that you can bronze and highlight at the same time. Sculpted cheekbones and a rosy complexion are just a compact away!

I just can't get to a larger Sephora fast enough!

College-Bound?

There is so much to write that I will have to break it up into a few posts. I am way behind on this project!

A few weeks ago the New York Times magazine had a very interesting article about high school seniors applying the college and the pressure they feel to have perfect applications, to get accepted early and to Ivy League universities. The article was somewhat reminiscent of the book "The Overachievers," by Alexandra Robbins, which is a fabulous read. Anyone with high-school-aged kids should read this book. Even I felt anxious for these kids as they completed the application process and went off to school. In a few weeks, Ms. Robbins will be speaking at an event here in Omaha and I urge everyone to go hear what she has to say.

Is it too early to be worried about college applications?!

Girls Day Out

The highlight of my weekend was spending Sunday afternoon with my daughter. I took her to a new salon at the Shadow Lake Towne Center , called Sweet and Sassy. The salon is hilarious. It reminds me of Libby Lu, but it is an actual salon so there are stations for hair, make-up and nails. They do birthday parties (on the pricey side) and once a week they do drawings where the winner gets to ride to school in the pink limo. I treated Abby to pedicure, which she loved. Truthfully, she would have been happy at home with mom painting her toe nails, but the expression on her face when she put on her leopard print and pink robe was worth every penny! She sat nicely to have her toes painted and then got sparkles in her hair and a glitter stamp on her cheek. After the pedicure, we ran across the center to our mini-Sephora. I made a few purchases which I will save for another blog, and Abby sampled just about every eye shadow at her eye level. She had a blast. After that she was exhausted and it was time for me to have some mommy time. I took her home to watch some baseball with daddy. Truly, it was one of my favorite mommy-daughter outings! Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me so you just have to use your imagination.

All Hail the New Jeans

Of course, this post is about my favorite subject...JEANS! I ordered a pair of wide-leg dark denim "Ginger" jeans by 7 for All Mankind from Nordstrom and they arrived in my mailbox this afternoon. They fit great, besides needing to be shortened (because not everyone is 6 feet tall!!!), and I can't wait to wear them. Of course, their first stop will be to the tailor. As usual, about 6 inches needs to be shaved from the bottom of each leg, and then the original hem needs to be put back on, but then they will be ready for prime time. The trick is always to make sure that they aren't hemmed too short so I have to try them on with a few pairs of shoes to make sure I know just how much to have trimmed. Aren't these cute? I can't wait to wear them!!

On another note, I recently finished a great book and have just started another one which I am really enjoying. The book I finished is a history of Saturday Night Live - it delves into pre-production and talks about the dynamic between Lorne Michaels, Dick Ebersol and the NBC management team. It's very interesting! My new book, complements of my mother-in-law, is "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan." So far, it's an excellent read. I am about 1/3 of the way through and am enjoying it immensely. I am torn between what to read next. We have a great book by David McCollough laying around about the history of the Brooklyn Bridge that looks good. If you have a recommendation, let me know!

Finally, you might remember my post about Rachel Zoe and how she trash talked Anna Wintour a few weeks ago. Ms. Zoe was recently fired by her publicist. It appears that Anna Wintour has more power and influence in the industry after all!

A Few Good Reads

I am always about a week (or month) behind on my reading. One might ask when it is that I have time to read, with being so busy with my kids, work, and life in general. Have any of you ever looked at my hair and wondered why it always looks a little "off?" Well, here's my secret. I read while I dry and straighten my hair. I think of myself as pretty well read, but not pretty! My hair sacrifices, but I am up on current events. I think I am teaching my children a valuable lesson here - it's more important to know what you're talking about than to look like you know what you're talking about, yes?

Two of my recommendations are magazine articles. First was an interesting profile on Rachel Zoe in the New York Times Magazine. Rachel Zoe is the stylist to celebutauntes and stars like Nicol Richie, Lindsay Lohan, Anne Hathaway and more. This is the article in which she slams on Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue, and says that Vogue has never influenced fashion the way she has when she styled her girls who were then photographed by the tabloids and then created fashion frenzies with whatever it is they were wearing that was so cute. Rachel Zoe might be a little nuts and look like a blonde raisin, but she knows what she is doing. She has turned the role of stylist into an integral part of any star's contract. In fact, the article states that Nicole Kidman declined to attend a movie premier because the studio refused to pay the $6,000 per day (yes, per day!!!) fee of having a stylist on hand. I don't agree with bashing one of the most influential and legendary women in the industry. On the other hand, she has created an empire. The article didn't delve into her background as much as I would have liked, but it was interesting and I learned a thing or two.

The other fascinating article was in the September issue of Vanity Fair -my favorite magazine. The article was about Hermes. It gave a history of the family, talked about the company's core values and business acumen. It was very interesting. I've been obsessed with Hermes since high school when my aunt had a belt with a big gold "H." Right after college graduation, my parents gave me an Hermes scarf as a gift. It's so beautiful I am afraid to wear it. And, a little secret, right before Abby was born I blew an entire paycheck on my very own Hermes handbag which is stowed in my closet awaiting the day when it can be carried without the fear of having to old a sippy cup or fruit snack. Anyway, the article was really interesting. I read it twice!

One for the Girls

In honor of the three adorable baby girls I know who came into the world this past week, I am dedicating this post to cute baby girl items!

One of my favorite little girl items are these cute socks by Trumpette. We received these as a gift when Abby was born and they are so cute!!! They also make some that look like ballet slippers.

For those of you who don't have a girl, Trumpette also makes socks that look like sneakers for little boys and new this season are camouflage socks.

Another fave are the cozy clothes from Tea Collection. Both of my children spent lots of quality time in this outfit in their early months. It's cozy and cute and my kids looked so cute in it! It is one of those outfits that I wish I had an adult version. It looks like the kind of outfit I would put on after a long day at work!

Of course, some of those new parents out there have a wry sense of humor, just like the author. If you have a good sense of humor, the Wry Baby line of t's and accessories is for you! Benjamin wore this little ensemble, given to him by his God-Mother, quite a bit. Now that I have a sense of my son's personality, I have to say this shirt is probably right on the mark!

Everything Makes Sense Again!

You may have noticed that I don't blog about consumer electronics. That's not because I don't love technology. I actually do. What many of my loyal readers (all three of them!) may not realize is that I used to work in the technology industry. After more than four years of 60+ hour work weeks, I was a little burned out and for a long time I just couldn't get jazzed up about technology. Now that I am back in the "game" working for an Internet-based company that actually has a very cool technology product, I am back!

I've been having some phone issues over the last six weeks. First my office graciously offered to pay for my cell phone bill. I had a blackberry that I really liked. My office got me the fancy new Blackberry 8830 Worldphone, which is the bomb. I LOVED it!!! But everyone else was using a Treo so I thought perhaps I should be using the same phone as the rest of my colleagues and the office encouraged it. So, I switched to the Treo. Within about five minutes I was regretting the decision. So, as anyone who loves technology would, I've had the blues ever since. Well, I am pleased to report that all is well in the world again because this weekend I got back my Balckberry. I LOVE my phone! Thank you to RIM, Voice Signal, Sprint and the other OEMs that went into making my phone such a wonderful piece of machinery!

I promise my next post will have something to do with fashion!

Seriously?!

I have never commented on celebrity gossip on my blog, because frankly, that is Perez's job.
But did any watch Britney's performance (or lack thereof) last night at the VMAs? Most of my girlfriends get fired up for spring/summer clothes (flouncy skirts, tiny t's and open-toed shoes) but for some odd reason I just love shopping in the fall. Maybe it's because I love back-to-school? I must be the only person who misses purchasing fresh notebooks and binders, pens, etc. Maybe it's because the fall is when lots of new jeans are introduced and everyone knows how I love jeans? Maybe all those years of living in New England rubbed off on me and I feel more comfortable buying coats and sweaters? I don't know why, and I don't really care. As far as I am concerned, fall shopping is the bomb, and this year is know exception!

Since school started, Benjamin and I have taken a few field trips to the mall for some quality mother-son bonding time. I love this little sweater dress! It's super cute with a t-shirt or turtleneck and tights - or jeans. I can't wait to wear this little number!

I also fell in love with a one-button cardigan, but don't have a photo of it.

And, how cute is this little shift dress (here on the left), which may make an appearance and Ken and Karen's nuptials in mid-October.

I just love fall, and I hope you do, too!

Never Full

In addition to my obsession with jeans, I also obsess over shoes and handbags. First, we spent a week on Cape Cod visiting grandparents and friends. We had a terrific time! The weather was amazing and the kids were great the entire time!

Our first day at the cape we had a party complete with a bounce house for the kids, though I think our friend Cumbo had the most fun (he's about 38 years old). It was great seeing our old friends - and their new kids! The crowd has grown significantly over the past 2 1/2 years. For the remainder of the week spent lots of quality time at the beach and at Dunkin Donuts. We had family pictures taken and ate lots of great food. At the end of our stay we drove to Boston and spent the day with my 2 closest friends from business school and all the kids played together. Seven kids and Abby was the only girl! In the evening we had a parent's night out downtown with more friends, while our very first babysitter ever spent some quality time with the kids. It was a great trip!

We made it home just in time for school to start. Abby was thrilled to get back to school and her routine. My little fashionista is now at school five mornings a week - and she picks out her own outfit every night before bed!

MXYPLYZYK

No, I have not lost my will to spell correctly. A few weeks ago I posted about Joe's Jeans. The "provocateur" style comes in petite so they don't have to be shortened. Additionally, the higher knee break means that they flare in the right spot. They come in two washes - a very dark dressy wash and a lighter, more casual wash. Here's a photo of the darker wash - very cute! I wore mine this weekend and they fit perfectly.

Another cute jean on the racks is the Seven For All Mankind "Ginger" wide leg jean. These are also dark, but have a wide leg - more like a trouser jean. I saw these on this weekend, and they are very cute. Especially with a heel! I can't wait to wear these!

We Did It!

For all of my loyal readers (all three of you) I am sorry the posts have been few and far between. So, I hope I get a free pass on this one.

Anyway, last weekend my friend Marti and I participated in the Avon 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer in Denver. It was truly an amazing experience. We had a fabulous time, and we walked our butts off (literally!). I encourage everyone who has the opportunity to take part in the 2-day walk. Here we are during lunch on the first day of the walk. I am sporting my "every three minutes ribbon" which serves as a reminder that every three minutes someone is diagnosed with breast cancer. They were presented to walkers every three minutes during the walk. Thank you to everyone for supporting our walk, and to Marti for being the best walking buddy a girl could have!

In the Pink

This weekend my friend Marti and I will be participating in the Avon 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer in Denver. My daughter, bless her heart, did everything in her power to make me completely crazy. Of course, there is always a silver lining to even the darkest of clouds. This morning my daughter got herself dressed and her outfit completely matched. She chose to wear hot pink shorts and a hot pink and orange striped tank top. Even her hot pink bathing suit matched. So, I guess I can look back at the day and say, "well, at least she looked good while she was driving me nuts!"

Totally Cute!

Anthropologie's summer catalog is out and is full of super cute tops, pants and dresses! I urge everyone to check it out. I can't wait to go shopping, and just as soon as I get over this terrible cold which makes me very sleepy I am going to make a few purchases.

My recent big purchase was a new pair of Nike Shox running shoes. We had a fabulous first year. Benjamin is a perfect baby. His pregnancy was relatively easy and uneventful. His labor and delivery was a breeze. He slept through the night by 8 weeks, never bothered me with a morning nap, and give me about 4 solid months where he could sit up and play but couldn't go anywhere. Seriously - the best baby ever (except for his sister who was also a great baby). So, today was bittersweet. I was sad to say goodbye to this wonderful year, but I am looking forward to watching Benjamin grow and I can't wait to see what kind of person he becomes over this next year. Even in the past two weeks I have noticed a dramatic change in his personality. Since he started getting in his teeth and crawling, he has become more aggressive and willful (just like me!). Happy birthday to my most special little guy. I HATE it!!!! It is cheezy and reminds me of everything that was wrong with junior high. Back in the olden days I had jeans in every color (red, green, purple, you geI t the idea). They were ugly then, and they are ugly now! I just really do not like colored denim. I am also not a fan of the skinny jean, because anyone who knows me would know that I would look hideous in them. Another horrible look is the high-waisted jean. Seriously, no one looks good in pants that come up to the bra line!

I just would not be able to sleep tonight if I didn't get that out in the open, and I feel much better. It's like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders! Phew. I leave that stuff up to my cousins, Stacey and Lori, who have a wealth of experience when it comes to getting cool stuff for your home. But since neither of them has a blog, it's up to me to inform my loyal readers about a great store in New York called Global Table. I haven't actually been to the store, but the small sampling of goods they sell online is great. Definitely check out www.globaltable.com.

On another note, our family celebrated a great milestone this weekend when my cousin Oliver, actually my second cousin for those of you paying attention, celebrated his Bar Mitzvah. He was fabulous! He was confidant on the bima and read his torah portion like a champ. I am so proud of him! My very large extended family was in town for the big event and it was lots of fun hanging out with all of my cousins and their children. Even better was watching my kids play with their out-of-town cousins.

Another exciting moment for our family was when my other cousin (or second cousin), Emma, graduated from pre-school. She was very proud on the stage. She sang all of her songs and did her little dance with perfection. Next year she is off to kindergarten, where I am sure she will run the show. You go girl!!!

On the Runway

Thanks to my friend, Jamie, for discovering the new Runway Boutique here in Omaha. It's a cute little shop full of fun, trendy and very inexpensive goodies. It's the perfect place to find cute going out tops and dresses, without having to empty out your piggy bank! For those of you locals, Runway Boutique is located on 132nd street just south of center in the shopping center in front of Dave and Busters (conveniently located across from Runza).

On another note, my cousin Oliver is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah on Saturday. My entire family, which is spread from coast to coast will be in the big O to celebrate this milestone. I can't wait to see everyone and for all of the new babies to meet each other. I am most excited because my brother, Mark, who has been traveling out of the country for the past few months is coming and will be in town for a few weeks.

The Perfect White Shirt (not for you)

I usually don't write about men's clothing because it's, well, boring. They really are my favorite item of clothing. I had about 28 minutes in between meetings this evening and took advantage of all that free time to try on jeans at Von Mauer. I think I tried on about 15 pairs of jeans. They were all great! How often does that happen?! My favorites were the Joe's Jeans Provacateur, which has a shorter inseam and is made for us petite types - and don't even need to be tailored!

I was looking for a pair of trouser jeans, so I only tried on jeans that had a dark wash and a wider leg. I was quite happy with the AG Jeans - they were my second choice. I also liked the Seven for All Mankind "dojo" jean as well as the True Religion "joey" jean. None of these are actually a trouser jean. I did, however, find a true trouser jean at anthropologie.com. This is a dark wash, wide leg jean. I can't wait for them to arrive so that I can see if they are keepers or not! Here is a picture - they're really cute!

The Super Suit

Phew! I FINALLY found something to wear to Oliver's bar mitzvah! I am not sure if I will wear this Friday night or Saturday morning, but I found a very cute lightweight black pants suit at AT Loft. It's a nice cotton-sateen material that is appropriate for May. The pants are basic black trousers that I will wear a ton, and the jacket is super cute! It's got 3/4 length sleeves and a darling pleat in the back. It would look cute with jeans and is something I will wear again and again. I have a few things I can put underneath the jacket, or I might find something else.

I also found a very cute black dress that would be cute with a cardigan or wrap, so maybe I will go back and try that on again. If I don't come across anything else, I will wear the suit on Saturday morning. Otherwise, it might make an appearance at Friday night services. I also thought my white linen pants with a dressy top would be cute for Friday night. Only time will tell! In any event, I am much less stressed out now that I have something to wear.

Benjamin also got a cute outfit to wear for Oliver's big day - navy shorts and a cute button-down shirt. I think he would look smashing in a burlap sack, but this outfit is pretty cute. Anyone who knows me knows I am not a short-wearing kind of girl. But, when it's 90 degrees out and you're chasing around munchkins all day, shorts are a necessary evil. I bought 2 pairs of bermuda shorts (black and khaki) from Old Navy, which unfortunately they must be sold out of, because I cannot find a photo of them online. They are actually quite cute. They are a very thin cotton cargo-style short - but not bulky cargo. I wore the black pair on Saturday with this super cute tunic from Anthropologie. It was really comfy. I've also worn it with jeans - super cute for a night out on the town.

I think this outfit is super cute. I wonder if I am tall enough to pull this off. We get to relax (as much as one can with a very active three-year-old), go at our own pace, and when it's nice, play outside. One of the things I love most about Sundays is the New York Times. I turn immediately to the Style section to see what's new, and of course, to read the wedding announcements. The people are always so interesting, and every once in a while I see someone I knew from college.

This week there was a great article about Italian design. From home goods to fashion, Italian designers know what's going on! I LOVE simple, sleek modern designs, which are sometimes hard to find. At the end of the article was a pretty comprehensive list of Manhattan stores and Web sites that sell Italian furniture and home accessories. I cannot wait to redecorate!
Check it out here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/26/garden/26webitaly.html?em&ex=1177992000&en=f8f18806998a7d25&ei=5087%0A

Well Rested

Everyone will be thrilled to hear that my monster headache FINALLY went away! All it took was a good dose of Tylenol PM-induced sleep! I felt like a million bucks. The thing is, even when I have had a massage and facial and am on vacation, I have the darkest circles under my eyes. I've tried just about every concealer product known to man to cover up the circles, but they are so dark that nothing seems to do the trick. Today was different!!!

I was perusing the cosmetics aisles at Target earlier this week when I came across this product by Physicians Formula. Their gimmick is that the product will, over time, erase dark circles. I don't see how this is possible. All I know, is that this morning I put some of this Circle RX on and my dark circles were gone. Or, as gone as they can possibly get!

I thought maybe it was just me. Then I got to work and one of the guys says to me, "Wow, you look well-rested!" I was thinking to myself, I must really look like crap most of the time if these yoohoos are noticing a little concealer! Then I started laughing to myself thinking about the hundreds - no thousands - of dollars I have spent over the past 20 or so years buying products to cover up these dark circles, when all I had to do was buy an $8 tube of magic at Target! In my defense, this is a new product. So, if you, too, are a victim of hereditary dark circles, I highly recommend that you run (yes, run) to your nearest Target or other store that sells Physicians Formula products, and get your hands on a tube of Circle RX. It will change your life!!!

Junior Fahionistas

Someone commented that I don't post enough pictures on my blog. From now on, I promise to make this blog a little more interesting.

This morning we were taking photos in the hopes that one would be fitting for Benjamin's birthday party invitation. The kids looked very cute! Benjamin was wearing a little polo shirt and jeans (before he got a goldfish cracker smooshed into the placket!), and Abby was wearing a cute trapeze top over a white t-shirt and capri jeans. They are very fashion forward, my kids. Especially Abby, who can put together an outfit all by herself - and it matches - and she is only three! Here they are in all their glory...

I just can't resist posting the photo that will grace Benjamin's birthday party invitations, because he is just so darned cute! He always has this kind of surprised look on his face. I remember the morning after he was born the nurse brought Benjamin into my room and he gave me this look as if to say, "You would NOT believe what just happened to me!" What a cutie!

I realize this post has nothing to do about fashion. It's not a migraine. It's just a nasty headache. I have one now, and I think it correlates to my trip today to the Nebraska Furniture Mart. I was there looking for new tile for our master bathroom. There was just too much to look at, and with so many choices I went into shut down mode and developed a headache that would kill most men. Seriously, I think if a man had this headache he would be in the emergency room! Oh no, I went on to deal with two extra cranky children for the rest of the day. It was awesome. No, I did not find any tile. So, I am really looking forward to making another trip to look at tile over the weekend. THAT sounds like fun!

And, I still do not have anything to wear to Oliver's bar mitzvah. I just never know what they are going to be selling, and sometimes I find something! Tonight I was visiting smartbargains.com. They have some great stuff right now - including some cute Marc Jacobs sunglasses. In the most random purchase I can think of ever, I bought an aero bed (to accommodate some house guests we are expecting this summer) and a very cute top by Joie (because everyone needs a cute top to wear with jeans). The aero bed was $59. I think they usually sell for about $120. The top was $39 and retailed for $115. The bargain of the night was definitely the Max & Co. evening dress for $29. It was so cute - black tulle and sequins - that it was a shame to leave it in the store. But really, where am I going in an evening gown!

Cute Tops and Candy

I stumbled onto this Web site couturecandy.com in my quest for something cute to wear to Oliver's bar mitzvah. This site showcases lots of up-and-coming and edgy designers. This is definitely a site to check out for cute t-shirts, jeans, casual dresses and just about everything else a girl could want!

On another note, I got my t-shirts today from Jennifer Dowd of Mac n Cheese. Her t's are so cute! I ordered one for each of my kids with their initials and then a long sleeve and short sleeve one for me. For those of you who aren't familiar with these t-shirts, Jennifer and her partner have very cute fabric swatches and trims which they use to make designs on shirts. For example, Benjamin's t-shirt has a "b" on it made from a cute fabric with guitars. One of my t-shirts is black and has a very amusing skull-and-bones fabric star on it. I can't wait to wear my shirts!

And finally, we're mourning the death of David Halberstam at our house. Mr. Halberstam died in a traffic accident in California today. He was an award-winning journalist who covered the Vietnam War for the New York Times, and authored several best-selling books, many which my husband and I have both read and enjoyed.

Go Big Red?

I just spotted something on the sale page on neimanmarcus.com that half made me chuckle and half annoyed me. This is a t-shirt by chip & pepper. I tend to doubt that the C&P designers are huge husker fans. Furthermore, I doubt that most people who shop at Neimans even know where Nebraska is, or know anything about the Husker Dynasty. So, I thought it was kind of funny. When we lived in Boston, there were lots of people who would ask where Omaha was, if I had grown up on a farm, etc. On the other hand, I was kind of annoyed that now a bunch of posers are going to be wearing our colors!!! I had the pleasure of shopping with my cousin Lori at Banana Republic, where I spotted a cute white blouse (for work) and a little top to wear to Oliver' s party, which is casual. Then I tried on some cute stuff at AT Loft. I was undecided, so I left without a purchase. I stopped in at Cristel's, a nice Omaha boutique, but I didn't find anything there either. Bummer.

Off I went to the Garment District, another fabulous Omaha boutique, and found a ton of stuff (non appropriate for the bar mitzvah). Garment District is owned by a girl I knew in high school, who lived and worked in New York's fashion district before moving back to Omaha and opening her store. She carries some really cute, unique items. I like shopping there, because I know that I wont see anyone else wearing my outfit. I got a cute little jacket and a trapeze top and t-shirt for work. Oh well, I guess I have a few weeks to find something.

Benjamin was a real trooper and shopped with me all morning. He was really good, and played in his stroller. He even treated me to lunch at Camille's, where the fancy lights were a big hit! Thank you, Benjamin, for being such a good boy and letting mommy shop all morning!!!! He finally passed out in his stroller, and I got the mommy guilties so we picked up Abby at school and came home for a much needed nap.

Denimology

I LOVE to wear jeans. I never tire of wearing them. One day last week I wore khaki pants to work for some bizarre reason, and I was sad all day. I love this Web site, denimology.com, (http://www.denimology.co.uk/) because all they talk about is the latest in denim, which I love. I am on the hunt for the perfect trouser jeans, so if you know of a good pair let me in on the secret. So, I find myself trolling the Internet when I am supposed to be doing something work-related. I know this store has been around for some time, but my new favorite destination for trendy items that I don't want to spend a ton of dough on is Forever 21 - www.forever21.com. I have this issue with super trendy items. They're cute, but short-lived. I hate spending a ton of money on something that is probably only going to in style for a season. When it comes to sweaters, dressy items and classic pieces I will pay top dollar because I can justify it more. So, if I buy something at a place like Forever 21 and I only wear it twice, it's OK because I didn't spend much to acquire the item. Of course, I bought a few cute tops from Forever 21 - I can't wait until they arrive!

Seen On

I have a new favorite Web site - www.seenon.com. On this site you can search for your favorite shows and see what the characters on that show are wearing and purchase the items if you so choose. I love to log on after an episode of Grey's Anatomy to see what comfy post-op outfit Meredith Grey is skulking around in. The best wardrobe has to be from the girls on The Hills. When I was in school and interning for free at a Boston-based PR firm I was not buying designer clothes and driving a BMW. I thought the Urban Outfitters was wicked cool and I took the T! But, these girls would rather die than take public transportation or shop at Urban. Anyway, they sure do know how to dress...you should see their frocks!

Enjoy browsing and shopping at seenon.com!

Fancy Party

Wow! We had the nuttiest weekend at our house. We went to they gym, attended a birthday party, visited a potential new housepet, took part in a "fancy party" and saw a concert. And that was just Saturday!

Saturday afternoon I took my daughter, who is three, to a "fancy party" at a local bookstore to celebrate the author of a book called Fancy Nancy, about a little girl who likes to make everything fancy schmancy. When I told Abby she could put on something fancy to wear to the party she immediately ran upstairs to find just the right outfit. I couldn't wait to see what she would choose. This girl definitely has a thing about fashion. I wonder where she gets it?

Abby used to have a habit of trying to wear everything in her closet at one time. We would wake her from her nap and she would be wearing 4 pairs of pants and 6 shirts. That morphed into changing her clothes up to seven times a day. And that morphed into this obsession with dresses and tights. For the past 9 months, Abby has insisted that she wear only dresses and tights every day. EVERY DAY. You have no idea how annoying it is to put a toddler in a dress with tights when the temperature outside is below zero! She is finally getting over it, and even wore jeans to school this week.

Back to the fancy party...Abby came running downstairs wearing a fairy costume. I didn't think it was quite fancy enough, so I sent her upstairs to find something even fancier. This time she did me proud, wearing a beautiful party dress in aqua and chocolate brown, with sparkly loafers and a faux pearl necklace and bracelet. Off we went to the fancy party. When we got there, the party was in full swing and Abby proudly joined the parade around the store. As I watched all the little girls parading around the store, I could see that fancy meant something different to each girl there. But they all had the right idea. It was very amusing to see what each of these girls had picked to wear. It's interesting to see how a child's imagination works, and how each girl imagined being "fancy." Of course, Abby was the most stylish of the bunch. When we got home, she took off her fancy dress, put on shorts and a t-shirt and said, "fancy was fun, but now I am playing soccer!" Somehow today was different! Finally, a sense of urgency! I know that for many people, writing about my obsession with clothes, accessories, cosmetics and other trivial topics is a waste of time. I don't really care what they think. By day I am a working mother of two. By night I am, yep, still a working mother of two. I have a great job with a great company and I work with really cool people. They are flexible about my nutty schedule and they seem really happy with my work. But if I could have any job, it would be to write for a fashion magazine. I always knew that was what I wanted to do, but I also knew that the money was elsewhere, so after college I worked for a PR firm that specialized in technology. I learned a lot and I had a very nice salary, but it wasn't my dream job. Since college a lot has changed. I am married to the greatest guy ever! I have my MBA! I have two gorgeous kids! Seriously, they are the most beautiful children you've ever seen! So, now I can just write about all this frivolous stuff that I love. Who knows. Maybe one day Anna Wintour will stumble across my blog. And if not, I hope my friends enjoy reading it.

So here was the moment that got me to finally write this blog:
A Sephora store has finally opened here in Omaha. Ok, not an actual Sephora. It's a new concept by JC Penney, whereby a mini Sephora store is located within a JC Penney store. Every time I tell someone about it they can't believe their ears. I am shocked, but virtually none of my girlfriends even knew that the store was opening here in Omaha. I don't think much PR was done to announce the store opening. Plus, I don't think many people pay much attention to a new JC Penney store.

The store within a store is actually a very interesting concept. For Sephora, they have the opportunity to open in a smaller market without incurring the expense of opening a large store. For JC Penney, it's the opportunity to bring new customers into their stores. Take me for example. I really cannot remember another time in my life where I have shopped in a JC Penney store. I have, however, spent many quality hours inside Sephora stores across the country. My Sephora experience was great. The sales consultant, Shar, spent time walking the floor with me and showed me several new products. I walked away with a cheek tint by Tarte, an eyeshadow by Bourjois, a Sephora brand concealer as well as a cleanser, toner and moisturizers by DDF.

Living with Omaha, people always comment that it's hard to find cutting-edge fashion and accessories (including cosmetics) locally. I have to say, I disagree. If you look hard enough and know where to shop, you can find most items. When we first moved here from Boston I was worried that I would never find the facial cleanser I was using at the time - Darphin. Of course, on my first trip to Von Mauer I wandered through the cosmetics counters and there was a Darphin counter. Over the past two years, I have noticed that while we still lack a really nice department store (Bloomies, Nordstrom, Neimans or Saks would be a welcome addition), our malls and shopping centers have pretty much the same stores as malls in larger cities. Sure, there are lots of stores I would love to have here, but the Internet is a wonderful tool. I have so much fun creating my own style by mixing bargains with higher priced items, and I love it when I find something really special that is completely different that anything else in my closet. My clothes compulsion is a great hobby. I am sure my husband would prefer that I take up something a little less expensive, but I am who I am!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://myclothescompulsion.blogspot.com/2007/03/what-we-have-sephora.html' title='What?
